You guys…I have news. Big huge news. May I reveal to you the ‘what’s next’ that bubbled out of my creative-hiatus-transitional-phase…
I got a job! A big deal job. I’ve never had a job. Well, that’s not entirely true. I worked part time in a couple of restaurants before I was old enough to vote and I did have a gig as an apprentice hairstylist when I was 17. I was fired from two out of three of those jobs because I really sucked at working for other people.
Other than that, I’ve been the big boss lady, runnin’ my own show for the past 15 years. In all that time I’ve never once considered working for someone else. I’ve got too much independent vision and am pretty particular about my lifestyle. Some people choose to give entrepreneurship a shot. I have no choice, it’s who I am.
I’ve never wanted a job, I certainly didn’t go looking for one. It didn’t really come finding me either. It was as though we locked eyes through a crowded room of vocational possibility and that was it.
You are now reading words from Integral Coaching Canada’s new Managing Director, Leadership and Strategic Innovation. Really it’s not a job. I’m a head honcho leading the company. My vision is not contorting itself; it’s expanded into a collective vision and I’m empowered to carry that out with the most incredible leadership team I could ask for. You may appreciate the sweetness of this moment: my first call with the only man on the executive team and he’s downing a green smoothie and cursing Mercury Retrograde for our tech glitches and I totally know I’ve made the right choice.
Not that my choice was ever in question for me. I’ve been working with ICC for years and my own business and practice is entirely built on this work. I’ve been directly standing in this lineage for quite awhile now. Over the past four years I’ve worked as an ICC formal development coach, working with students to complete their certification, I’ve sat on certification committees, chaired the certification committee, and most recently joined the faculty teaching the professional and master certification modules.
While you probably already know that I love, love, LOVE Integral Coaching® and working deeply with people to live out their deepest calling, what I’ve been struggling with over the past year or so is how to scale what I’m doing. I’ve found the notion of scaling to be tricky. Some things scale well and I understand the wisdom in mass delivery and automation, creating passive revenue streams and the like. And that’s all good and fine from a strategic business perspective, but I’m in the business of alleviating suffering. And that requires intimacy and human connection that cannot scale endlessly.
So I’ve been torn. I’ve been torn between my need for wider reach, deeper work and greater impact and my love for immediacy and intimacy. I’ve been stretched to take time to innovate and create when my entire business model relies on my revenue being earned through showing up in real time for my incredible clients.
This new role is like winning the lottery of purposeful possibility. All of the initiatives of program design and community building and content creation that I used to have to slice off pieces of my weekend or tackle at 5am are now key parts of my role. ICC Founders, legends in the world of human development, are Joanne Hunt and Laura Divine, my direct bosses. Here is how a conversation goes:
Me: “I have an idea of where I’d like to take this…”
Them: “Great, go lead that.”
It’s like all the bliss of my entrepreneurial life but with continuous mentorship and incredibly skillful feedback and support right where I need it. From ICC’s Founders and two other Managing Directors who I work closely with each day and the rest of the ICC team, to our extended team of faculty and amazing community. I was literally crying into my beer at our recent Mastery Workshop pub night where 80+ Integral Master Coaches™ gathered, while a few of my peers earnestly shared how deeply they support this move and how they’ve got my back with what we’re collectively building. I’ve only been in this role for just over a month and I can feel myself stretching into potentials that I’ve been longing to reach into for a very long time.
So this is what bubbled up when I sat and waited for what was coming for me. You may be left wondering what this means for my coaching business and for my website that I am still totally in love with and only launched less than a year ago. For now she’ll remain, looking pretty and I’ll continue to write and keep you posted on this transition as I step into this new future.
For all the clients I am currently working with, I will joyfully carry out the terms of all of their programs. We’ve still got so much good work to do. But I am no longer taking new clients. It’s not to say I won’t take on new coaching clients in the future. But for this year I’m going to sink in my teeth. If you’re thinking you missed your chance for us to work together, it’s not true. I’m on the calendar to teach several times this year and while I don’t teach the first coaching module (ACM), we can work together in the two following that (PCM and MCM). If you’ve ever considered becoming a coach, or if you’re already a coach and curious about expanding your skill set and embodiment, Integral Coaching® is just beyond in its depth, art and complexity. And the community that comes with us is extraordinary. I can confidently travel anywhere that a member of our Consortium lives and trust that I’d have a sofa to crash on, even if we’ve never met.
Beyond teaching the Integral Coaching® Certification Program, I’ll be working closely with Kevin Snorf, Managing Director, Training and Ecosystem Development to develop new programs to expand our reach and service and so there’s so much more to come from me. I hope you hang around and see what’s next.
Thanks for being on this journey with me, for spending your precious time reading this and I look forward to continuing to create and connect with you.
PS- I do have one request. Since my role includes marketing and we’re about to beef up our online presence…will you help make me look really good by popping on over to our Facebook page and liking it? And sharing it with your friends? I’ll be designing and delivering all sorts of goodies there for you in the months to come. Please come see me there.
PPS- Oh, and one last thing before you go…Are you in or around the San Francisco area on Tuesday July 21? I’m co-leading a free event called Create the Change You Seek and I’d love for you to join us! You can check it out and RSVP here.
