Heavy title huh? It’s heavy shit. What is not being fulfilled and why not? Said another way, what is our world waiting for from you and what’s holding you back? I am insightful and I am talented. This isn’t horn tooting and it isn’t personal, it’s a mixture of my genetics, personality, culture, the opportunities I’ve been afforded and the time and place we are on this planet. Much comes easily to me and I grateful for that. But what comes with it is an intense amount of anxiety. What happens for someone when they have the impulse and resources to be of great contribution? They must. I must. You must. I get anxious. You may not see it and I’m often not aware of it. I am confident. I take up space. I will move into, run into, explode into life with a kind of ferocity that looks like I know what I am doing. Sometimes I do. But anxiety will take a person out. Just like grief or anger or shame or fear. One might look for release, for escape, for some kind of distraction to not have to … [Read more...]
The Hat Trick
I own a variety of hats. Which is totally weird because I’m not really a ‘hat person’, but it seams that I have accidentally accumulated a bunch over time. I finally have a use for them. I was recently exploring this notion of role and the challenge that I face around moving from role to role with a sense of presence and grace. As I have been engaging in this predicament, I am seeing it everywhere with others that I work with and love, as one sees dogs everywhere after they get a new puppy. It is described to me that one will be thinking about a client’s project while they should be attending to their accounting and worrying about their bottom line while playing with their kids and thinking about what to make for dinner and when to do the shopping when they’re listening to a client drone on about something…something that is likely deeply important but they can’t hear because they are not present. Being complex beings it is often difficult to compartmentalize, especially or perhaps … [Read more...]
Compassion. Get some.
In so many ways we are the same. In so many ways we are so radically different from one another. What is downright fascinating is that we all suffer, we all know that we all suffer and yet most of us are still unable to connect to the suffering of others. In fact, we make our suffering about others…the whole, ‘you’re doing this to me’ thing. Suffering is an inevitable part of being human, that our suffering comes from each other is both undeniably true and a complete illusion. There is so much that wants to be said about compassion, about expanding our perspectives to understand those of others, especially when they are in conflict with our own. I read a quote on a friend’s facebook page the other day that I had not heard before. It struck me so deeply that I read it to my father, we both welled up a little and I decided that rather than go into a post all about the nuances of what’s needed for each other in this world, I would leave you with this quote, because it simply says what … [Read more...]
Better believe it.
What big ol’ stack of beliefs do you have stored away about what it will take to have your work be what you want it to be? How many hours are not enough? How many are too much? How long should it take you to reply to an e-mail? a phone call? What are your standards for the work that you do? Is good enough, enough, just get it done and get the cheque? Or is perfection the expectation- vigilance the method? How do you see people and their role? They serve you? You serve them? You’re all one collective supporting each other? What we believe will drive our actions and our actions will give us a particular result and experience. We have beliefs that empower what we’re up to and move us along and we have beliefs that limit what’s possible. Being aware of these beliefs is imperative and a challenge, since the nature of belief structures is that they are subjective and thus blind from our view. That is, we believe that what we believe is the way that things are. Usually. But when we begin … [Read more...]
The Myth of Competition
I’ve spent a good deal of my time writing business plans for other people and the part of the plan that I loath is the competitive analysis. Not because I don’t think that having that information is valuable, indeed, it is, but because the over all approach to competition in business is archaic and, to go all hippie on you for a moment, leads to a contraction rather than an expansion of energy. We humans are obsessed with being better than one another and although healthy competition is the source of great innovation, getting caught up in trying to out-do another or positioning what we are up do based on beating out someone else is a very small way to live. Before stating the following, I will acknowledge that it is a bit of a green-new-age view to say there really can be enough for everyone. So much about how business is being done now is moving towards transparency, community and human connection. It is no longer the best strategy to be stingy with your information. With social … [Read more...]
Bucket of Balls
A number of years ago I lived with a friend, a single mom, and her two year old daughter. Two year olds are awesome, my son is two now. They are funny and learning so much, everyday a new adventure for learning. One particular day, I learned a lesson from this two year old girl that has stuck with me. She was walking around with this bucket of balls. She would stop somewhere and pull them out and put them on the ground, arrange the colours and so forth and then put them back in the bucket and take them somewhere else. She was very very busy with this bucket of balls. Quite suddenly she tripped and the balls went flying. She lost it. LOST IT. Crying hysterically, her mother rushed in and helped her pick up the balls and comfort her in her distress. I found it annoying. At first I couldn’t sense why it was so annoying but it was. I mean, it’s just a bucket of balls, so what, they fell, just pick them up, what’s with the whole production? Part of why I found it annoying was because I … [Read more...]
Get R Done
We’ve all got at least one. Most of us have a whole list smashing around in our heads, possibly not even written anywhere. They hang there like laundry on a line in a slight drizzle, threatening to never quite dry and thus hang there forever. To do’s. You know what I’m talking about. Not the to-do’s that are written down and checked off. Not the dozens upon dozens of items we do get done everyday and without even thinking. I’m talking about the important stuff. The items that haven’t become so urgent that if you don’t take care of it now, you’ll see the impact. But you feel the impact. It’s the item that you keep wanting to get to but other more urgent things always seem to take your attention. When I was but a wee little business owner, I hadn’t yet registered my company for GST. I was going to do that on Monday. This went on for a long long time. It would be in the back of my mind, I’d know it was important, but Monday was paper work day, so I’d put it off until Monday. Of course … [Read more...]
